I am trying to date a Breitling Navitimer. Pix to follow. The face is all black, marked as follows: under the 12: Breitling in script; under that is the gold AOPA wings logo. At the very bottom, under the 6: SWISS MADE in tiny type. There is no NAVITIMER on the face. What we have here is a very accurate re-edition of a Breitling Navitimer from 1959. The first edition to be sold was the reference 806, powered by a manual chronograph movement with column wheel mechanism, the Venus 178. 1954: the 806 was equipped with a Valjoux 72 (the same movement as the vintage Rolex Daytona) and thus, are among the most collectible. In October of 2016 I purchased a second vintage Breitling Navitimer which I knew would be a long term project. The watch consisted of only a Venus 178 movement, dial, slide rule, and hand set. I would need to service the movement and find a case and strap for it before the project was complete. The dial on the watch naturally feels very familiar, featuring an all-black dial with sunken sub-dials. The hands and indices on the dial are complete with faux lume in that light custard colour. The iconic winged logo is back on this re-issue unsigned, with just simple BREITLING in caps above. I am trying to date a Breitling Navitimer. Pix to follow.
