Bakelite was the world’s first entirely synthetic plastic that was lightweight, relatively durable, and easy to mold into different shapes. Given those characteristics, Bakelite was initially considered a good material choice for the bezel insert for the GMT-Master watch. Considered a prototype Rolex GMT with a Bakelite bezel from 1955 to 1956, this watch was in incredible condition. Yup, let's go hands-on with the mythical albino GMT. Rolex began to use aluminum bezel inserts in the 1950s. It replaced the previous material known as Bakelite, which is an acrylic with radium numerals embedded inside. Because of the brittle nature of Bakelite, as well as the radioactivity .While the red and blue bakelite is the version and color most often seen, Rolex also made a brown bakelite insert that is a dream too (see picture here)*.
